How Relationship Testing Works

When an alleged father is missing, deceased, or unwilling to participate, we can still establish a biological link to a child by testing his immediate blood relatives.

Because a child inherits exactly 50% of their DNA from their father, that father's genetic markers are shared with his own parents (the child's grandparents) and his full siblings (the child's aunts/uncles/siblings). By testing these relatives, our AABB-accredited laboratory can reconstruct the missing father's DNA profile and confirm paternity.

Note: We strongly recommend including the child's Mother in relationship testing. Her DNA helps the lab isolate which genes the child inherited from the maternal side, making the paternal search much more precise.

Relationship Testing FAQs

Can I establish paternity if only one grandparent is available to test?
Yes, but testing the child's mother is highly recommended. While one grandparent shares 25% of their DNA with the grandchild, having the mother's DNA allows the lab to eliminate her genetic contribution, making the single grandparent's DNA much easier to match against the child's remaining paternal DNA.
How does a siblingship test work? Can it tell if we have the same father?
Yes. A siblingship test determines the statistical probability that two individuals share one parent (half-siblings) or both parents (full siblings). If you are trying to find out if you share the same father, we strongly encourage testing a known parent (like the mother) alongside both siblings to drastically strengthen the results.
What is a Twin (Zygosity) DNA test used for?
A Twin DNA test scientifically proves whether twins are identical (monozygotic) or fraternal (dizygotic). Identical twins share the exact same DNA profile, while fraternal twins share about 50%, just like standard siblings. This is often used for medical reasons (like organ transplants or disease risk assessments) or simply for personal curiosity.
Can an aunt or uncle test completely replace a paternity test?
An avuncular (aunt/uncle) test is an indirect way to determine paternity. Because a full sibling of the alleged father shares about 50% of their DNA with him, we can test them against the child. While standard paternity tests offer 99.9% certainty, avuncular tests provide a statistical likelihood of relationship. Including the child's mother in the swab significantly increases the accuracy of this likelihood.
Can I use an at-home kit for a grandparent or sibling test?
Yes, you can choose the "Peace of Mind" option for personal knowledge, which can be done with an at-home kit or in-clinic. However, if you need the results for inheritance claims, Social Security survivor benefits, or immigration, you MUST select the "Legal Court-Admissible" option, which requires an in-person clinic appointment with strict chain-of-custody protocols.
